Colombian Striker Becerra Shot Dead

Colombia's endemic violence has once again spilled into football, after Colombia's international striker Elson Becerra was shot dead, along with a friend in a night club in Cartagena, his home city.

Becerra featured for Colombia in their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign in which they finished 6th in their group.

Sadly, this isn't the first time Colombian football has been marred by such violence - the most infamous case being the shooting of International defender Andres Escobar who was shot and killed in 1994 after returning from the World Cup.

Colombia were knocked out of the competition after Escobar scored an own goal against hosts the USA.
