Mixing Politics and Sport.
Former Conservative shadow secretary Michael Ancram (bear with me...) has suggested Iran should be thrown out of the World Cup because of the resumption of their nuclear programme.
"An exclusion from the World Cup would give a very, very clear
signal to Iran that the international community will not accept what
they are doing. It may be unpleasant but you can give a very hard
signal which isn't going to hurt people as such but is going to at
least give a chance of registering in the minds of the Iranian people
that what their president is doing is unacceptable to the international
community."
Now, I don't for a minute think that this will actually happen, but if it were the only effect it's going to have is to piss off a lot of Iranians football fans, and bring the world of politics into sport, which generally isn't a great idea.
