Shock, Horror. Sven to leave after World Cup.

Well, this whole saga seems to have been dragging on for a fair while, but hopefully it's all finally over. The FA has confirmed Sven's doing one after the World Cup, win or lose.

The chief exec of the FA, Brian Barwick, has said: "The FA and Sven felt it was important to clarify his future.

"There has been so much speculation surrounding this matter in recent weeks and months, it was important to resolve it now.

"This is the right outcome and I would like to thank Sven and his advisors for their tremendous co-operation.

"Our main objective is giving Sven and the England team the best chance of achieving success at the World Cup and Sven is definitely the man to lead us in Germany."

So there you go. Move along now. Nothing to see here.

FIFA World Rankings - January

So, the not-at-all-arbitrary FIFA rankings have been released for January, and unsurprisingly there are a few strange results.

Most strangely, is Germany being in 17th, two places below that footballing powerhouse, Japan. Then there's Mexico and the USA in joint seventh, in front of footballing minnows England, Portugal and Italy. To round it off, the Czech Republic are 2nd - now they may be some people's (very) outside bet to take the World Cup, but honestly, are they really a better team than Argentina? The same Argentina who beat Brazil in qualifying?

The FIFA Top Ten International Teams

1 - Brazil
2 - Czech Republic
3 - Netherlands
4 - Argentina
5 - Spain
5 - France
7 - Mexico
7 - USA
9 - England
10 - Portugal

Africa's Football Academies

The World Cup Blog has highlighted a good article in the Times about the proliferation of footballing academies in Ivory Coast.

Instead of pushing their children into schools, parents are sending them to footballing academies in the hope that they become the next Kolo Touré.Football is a lucrative business, even in Africa, and for many young people represents their only way out of poverty in a country torn apart by civil war.

However with over 300 academies in the capital alone most stand little chance of finding their fortunes in the west, especially as many such 'schools' provide minimal facilities beyond a bare patch of earth...

African Cup of Nations

On the 20th January Egypt will play host to the 25th African Cup of Nations, showcasing the best in African footballing talent.

In recent years a combination of the frequency of the tournament (it takes place every two years, rather than every four as with the European Championships) and scheduling conflicts with European domestic leagues have lead to the competition being considered a poorer relation to it's European cousin by many.

However, the competition should still have more than it's fair share of good matches, with Ivory Coast, Angola, Tunisia and Ghana all looking to impress before the World Cup in June.

For more information on the tournament, take a look at About a Ball's team by team guide , or the BBC African Cup of Nations home page.

Tabloidtastic - Sven duped something cronic.

So, the big story over the weekend was the News of the World's exclusive where their 'Fake Sheik' made another appearance and duped England Manager Sven Goran Eriksson into spilling the beans about his England contract, intentions after the World Cup, and a few interesting comments about some of his players.

Under the pretence of a Rich Sheik interested in buying a Premiership club, Mazhar Mahmood held talks with Eriksson and his agent, Athole Still, which uneartherd such notable quotes as;

Reporter: "In your opinion Sven, what was the most exaggerated player’s transfer? Or money spent on one player that Chelsea did?"
Sven: "Shaun Wright-Phillips, how much did they pay for him?"
Still: "Who? Who?"
Sven: "Shaun Wright-Phillips, £25 million." As well as a few quotes about Rooney coming from a poor family, Owen not being happy at Newcastle, Beckham not being happy at Madrid,

Reporter: "How do you get the right manager?"
Reporter 2: "Could we prise you away from England?"
Sven: (Laughs)
Reporter: "But you're not allowed to do two jobs are you?"
Sven: "No, but everything is possible. But only at the end of the season."
Reporter: "Seriously, are you interested [in managing the club] or are you joking?"
Sven: "No I'm not joking."

Now, the News of the World is hardly the last bastion of journalistic integrity, so I'd take the whole article with more than a pinch of salt, but it's clear that there is some truth there, which is embarrasing to say the least...

Eriksson's niavity about matters of the media continues to amaze, and this is far from ideal preparation for a World Cup England are hoping to win.

International Herald Tribune write up.
Atholl Still's reponse on BBC 5 Live.
Eriksson says players forgive him.

Mixing Politics and Sport.

Former Conservative shadow secretary Michael Ancram (bear with me...) has suggested Iran should be thrown out of the World Cup because of the resumption of their nuclear programme.

"An exclusion from the World Cup would give a very, very clear
signal to Iran that the international community will not accept what
they are doing. It may be unpleasant but you can give a very hard
signal which isn't going to hurt people as such but is going to at
least give a chance of registering in the minds of the Iranian people
that what their president is doing is unacceptable to the international
community."

Now, I don't for a minute think that this will actually happen, but if it were the only effect it's going to have is to piss off a lot of Iranians football fans, and bring the world of politics into sport, which generally isn't a great idea.

Argentina in Crisis?

With key players injured, the first team not decided and only one game left before the World Cup, could one of the most fancied teams in the tournament be in crisis?

Since qualifying for Germany with a 3-1 over holders Brazil, and 3 games to spare, Argentina's fortunes have taken a downturn. They finished second to Brazil in their qualifying group after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay, and lost 3-2 in a friendly match against England.

Then came the World Cup draw, where they were placed in the 'Group of Death' with the Ivory Coast, Serbia & Montenegro and the Netherlands.

There have also been numerous injuries in the squad, with Ayala, Macherano, Sorin and Heinze out, with Heinze possibly remining injured until after the competition.

Added to the fact that manager Bielsa has used more than 50 different players since his appointment in October 2004, and things don't look good.

Having said all of that, it's easy to be sensationalist about World Cup teams, especially when it happens to be one of the competition's favourites.

The truth is, the competition is still 5 months away, only Heinze seems a doubt for the tournament, and even in the narrow defeat to England Argentina showed signs of the kind of play that saw them beat Brazil in June.

I'd still put them as second favourites with England to win the tournament...

Happy 5th Anniversary Sven

Hasn't time flown?

Our beloved England manager has has a rollercoaster ride since his appointment in January 12th 2001, from the 5-1 defeat of Germany in the September '01, to the penalties defeat to Portugal in 2004, and despite a good early start he doesn't seem to have endeared himself to England fans (or more importantly the media) particularly well.

His perceived lack of passion during games, propensity to substitute as many players as possible during friendlies, and very public 'private' life have all contributed to a growing criticism from many, especially the Tabloid press. Despite all this, the defeat to Northern Ireland in 2005 was the his first ever defeat in a qualifying match, and England have only lost three competitive matches under the Swede.

Sven still believes England can win it in Germany this year: "England are at the same level as Argentina, Brazil, Holland, Italy, Germany and France...We are better now - much better. I would say England now have a team with good players who have the right experience, and that's why I think we have a chance to win the 2006 World Cup."

There's a full interview with Eriksson at The Guardian.

World Cup Safety Fears Continued

So, Stiftung Warentest have sufficiently milked the PR from their earlier press release and have released the findings of their report into the World Cup Stadia.

To be honest it's all a bit of an anticlimax, the main concern being the distance between the lower tier seeting and the pitch at Central Stadium in Leipzig.

However, the main problem with the report is evacuation procedures in the stadiums evacuate fans outside the stadia, rather than on to the pitch in case of emergency.

In responce to the claims, Franz Beckenbauer the president of the Organising Committee said "Stiftung Warentest may know a lot about facial cream, olive oil and vacuum cleaners - and that is what they should stick to.".

Move along, nothing to see here...

World Cup Weblog - Germany 2006

Fulham's Goal Keeper Tony Warner has agree to play for Trinidad and Tobago in this year's World Cup despite not holding a Trinidad Passport.

Warner's father Clyde was born in Trinidad and Tobago before moving to Britian 44 years ago, meaning his son can play for the country he last visited in 1995.

Warner has made 14 starts this season for Fulham, and will join his teammates in Germany to face England, Sweden and Paraguay in the group stages of the competition.

His first task will be to learn the Trinidad national anthem "Forged From the Love of Liberty".

Thinking of trying your luck in the Trinidad team? Then you'll need to get learning:

Forged from the Love of Liberty
in the Fires of Hope and Prayer
with boundless faith in our destiny
We solemnly declare

Side by Side we stand
Islands of the blue Caribbean Sea
This our native land
we pledge our lives to thee

Here every creed and race find an equal place
And may God bless our nation

Here every creed and race find an equal place
And may God bless our nation.

Colombian Striker Becerra Shot Dead

Colombia's endemic violence has once again spilled into football, after Colombia's international striker Elson Becerra was shot dead, along with a friend in a night club in Cartagena, his home city.

Becerra featured for Colombia in their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign in which they finished 6th in their group.

Sadly, this isn't the first time Colombian football has been marred by such violence - the most infamous case being the shooting of International defender Andres Escobar who was shot and killed in 1994 after returning from the World Cup.

Colombia were knocked out of the competition after Escobar scored an own goal against hosts the USA.

Don't Panic. No, Seriously.

German consumer magazine Stiftung Warentest has tested the 12 World Cup stadia ahead and found "serious deficiencies that could have grave consequences if panic broke out".

Strangely, the magazine hasn't detailed any of the shortcomings,or what exactly could happen if anyone panics inside the ground (spontanious human combustion perhaps? Overly long queues at the toilets?), but will reveal all in it's press conference on January 19th. That's it guys - work the PR as hard as you can.

That leaves the World Cup Organising Committee in the unenviable position of having to sit tight about the stadium problems, and watch the news on the 19th like the rest of us.

It's not the first time there have been problems with the stadia, which cost about €1.5 billion to build and refurbish. Fritz Walter Stadium in Kaiserslautern had to be closed when a large crack appeared in one of the stands, and during the Confederations Cup final last year the roof on Eintracht Frankfurt's stadium failed to keep the rain out, leading to torrents of water pouring on to the pitch.

So much for German efficiency. Makes Wembley seem vaguely successful.

Well almost...

Ireland's Dream Duo: Staunton and Robson

No, really.

According to The Guardian, Walsall's assistant manager is set to be offered the Republic of Ireland job, with Sir Bobby to be his 'guiding mentor'.Staunton is Ireland's most capped player ever, with 106 appearances, and Robson is, well, erm, unemployed and slightly senile. The Republic of Ireland will begin a 6 months qualifying campaing for the 2008 European Championships on 1st March with a friendly against Sweden at Lansdowne Road.

Mexican Warlock in World Cup Prediction Shocker

So, over on the World Cup Blog, there's a story about Mexico's 'Grand Warlock' who's predicted a strange turn of events in the World Cup:

"Antonio Vazquez, the Grand Warlock, has apparently been making predictions about world events, including sporting events, for the past 25 years based on his reading of tarot cards and the stars.

"This time around he is convinced that Germany is going to win it all and that Ronaldinho won't make it to the finals because of an unspecified injury." Which is great, but the Grand Warlock's predictions haven't exactly been spot on in the past - he predicted a European side would win the 2002 competition...

Worst. Tackle. Ever

OK, not strictly relevent to the World Cup, but I couldn't pass up a title like that. What can i say? I'm a Simpsons quote whore.

In Spurs' 2-0 win over Man City last night Lee Young-Pyo was stretchered off after David Sommeil made a studs-first tackle which was missed by the referee.Lee condemned the tackle, as did his manager Jol: 'Lee said it was the worst tackle ever - and I believe him,'.'It looked a bit horrific. I can understand why the referee missed it because he was focussed on the first tackle. My only problem is that Lee has bad bruising on his knee and will probably be out for a couple of weeks.'

Football in 'better than baseball' shocker.

So, a team of scientists in New Mexico (there's a New Mexico? - Homer) have been studying a load of sports to see which had the most upsets, and football is the most exciting (Cancer cured already guys?).

They analysed more than 300,000 games from the past century in the US and UK and found that the 'upset frequency' was highest for football, closely followed by baseball.

Now, fair enough football is the most exciting - there's skill on display even when there aren't any goals, but rounders baseball second? I'm afraid it doesn't matter how many upsets there are - it's still watching a bloke hit a ball with a stick for 3 hours then running round in circles. At least in cricket there are tactics - baseball pretty much has two options, hit it or don't.

Anyway, I am now content in the knowledge that football is the most exciting sport of all, although this won't comfort me much the next time I have to watch the mighty Villa play Bolton anyone.

World Cup unknowns

The BBC has a good list of relatively unknown Premiership players who will be jetting of to join their national squads this summer.

The list includes such notables as Staffordshire born-and-raised Chris Birchall, who became the first white player in 20 years to play for Trinidad and Tobago on his debut, and scored the equaliser against Bahrain in the first leg of their World Cup playoff. And Australia's Josip Skoko, who despite failing to break into the Wigan starting lineup played a large part in Australia's successful World Cup Qualifying campaign.

Jol: Defoe will make World Cup

Martin Jol has backed Spurs striker Jermain Defoe to make the England squad for the World Cup in June.

Defoe made a strong impression in England's qualifying match against Poland, scoring the winner to help send England through, but has since struggled for first team football at Spurs.

To make matters worse, he's been pushed down the England pecking order by 'Good Touch For a Big Man' himself, Peter Crouch.

However, Jol still believes Defoe will travel with the team to Germany:

"There is no problem with Jermain not starting games. He will get his matches.

"The last couple of times when he came on, he was really on fire. He is probably the only player we have who can really do something out of nothing.

"I don't think it makes it difficult for the England manager to pick Defoe if he is not starting games for us he will still go to Germany."

The biggest problem I can see for Defoe is that, at least in Eriksson's eyes, he doesn't offer something different enough to Owen to command a place as super sub. Eriksson likes to bring on Crouch to completely change the game - he may not see Defoe as a player who can do that.

I've no doubt he'll be on the flight to Germany, but I do think appearances will be few and far between.

James: 'David Frost saved my career'

Well, kinda.

David 'Don't call me Calamity' James has confessed to the BBC that the Denmark game (you know, the one where he flapped around widely, and let in 4 goals in 45 minutes) gave him the 'kick up the backside' he needed to knuckle down to training in an effort to get rid of a few of those schoolboy errors that kept cropping up.

Slightly strangely, a certain David Frost also set alarm bells ringing:

"I was sitting in a hotel watching an England game with Sir David Frost, who was an all right bloke who knows his football.

"But although that might be something to tell the grandchildren about, it was not where I wanted to be,"

Seriously though, as a Villa fan I think critics can be overtly harsh on poor Mr. James - he's an excellent shot stopper, and calamities aside, and decent all round keeper. He also seems like a decent bloke to boot.

However, I just don't have the same faith in him between the sticks as I do with Robinson.

Hopefully David can change that, but I wouldn't hold my breath...

Catching Up - The FIFA World Cup Draw

So, as we've started a little late on this, I still haven't covered the reaction to the draw for the World Cup Finals.

Somehow, FIFA managed to string the draw out to 90 minutes, with only the appearance of Heidi Klum helping to numb the boredom, but there were some interesting groups thrown up.

Group A saw Germany and Poland drawn together in a fairly tough group. Ecuador, who beat Brazil in qualification, and Costa Rica make up the rest of the group.

Group B was a source of relief for England. Paraguay and Trinidad should be easy matches for the second seeds, but Sweden could cause problems. They scored 30 goals in the 10 qualifying games and with Henrik Larsson and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front you can see why.

Group C was instantly dubbed the 'Group of Death' after the draw, and Argentina will have a tough group stage, having to face the unseeded Holland to make it through the group. However, The Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro should pose little threat.

Group D saw the 5th seed Mexico drawn against Portugal in what could be an evenly contested match. Iran and Angola however will do well to continue past the group stages.

Group E looks particularly tough for all concerned. Italy, the United States and the Czech Republic will all be looking to progress, but only Ghana seem likely to miss out - who out of the other three make it through is difficult to judge.

Group F looks equally as difficult to call. Holders Brazil must be favourites to top the group, but Australia, Croatia or Japan could all win on their day.

Group G is slightly more clear cut - France seem likely to dominate, and Togo are unlikely to impress. Switzerland and South Korea are a little more evenly matched, but without the huge home support they saw in 2002 (or the help of the referrees) Switzerland seem more likely than Korea to progress automatically.

Finally, Group H sees Spain and the Ukraine likely contenters to top the group, with Spain hoping they can hit some sort of form for the tournament. Tunisia and Saudi Arabia I suspect will be looking at the playoffs to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament.

The draw in full:

Group A
Germany,
Costa Rica,
Poland,
Ecuador

Group B
England,
Paraguay,
Trinidad &
Tobago,
Sweden

Group C
Argentina,
Ivory Coast,
Serbia & Montenegro,
Holland

Group D
Mexico,
Iran,
Angola,
Portugal

Group E
Italy,
Ghana,
United States,
Czech Republic

Group F
Brazil,
Croatia,
Australia,
Japan

Group G
France,
Switzerland,
South Korea,
Togo

Group H
Spain,
Ukraine,
Tunisia,
Saudi Arabia

The Curse of the Metatarsal

Beckham set the fashion first (naturally), then came Gary Neville, Danny Murphy, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and now Michael Owen. The curse of the broken Metatarsal continues for England as Owen limped out of Newcastle's 2-0 defeat, and is due to be out for a minimum of 2 months.

The news is catostophic for an in-crisis Newcastle, but is also bad news for England. Owen shouldn't miss the finals in June, providing there are no complications, however when Gary Neville suffered a similar injury, he didn't return for 5 months. Not a reassuring sign...

'Bora' to miss his first World Cup for 20 years

For the last 20 years, throughout all the World Cup's ups and downs and managerial casualties, one my has been a constant - Velibor Milutinovic.

'Bora' as he's known, has managed Mexico, Costa Rica, the United States, Nigeria and China to the World Cup - an impressive record.

But now, with no team to manage in next year's competition, Bora will be left waiting for the African Cup of Nations' managerial casualties to book himself into his 5th consecutive World Cup - a sad state of affairs for the competition's perrenial manager...
